Your guide to the STK and emission tests
When to go for an STK, what to bring, how much the inspection costs, how emission tests work and what to do if your car fails.
-
When does my car need an STK?
A new car must go for its first STK within 4 years of registration and then every 2 years. Motorcycles within 6 years and then every 4 years; trucks, buses, large trailers, taxis and rental cars every year. The date of the next inspection is in the report from your last STK.
-
What should I bring to the STK?
For a regular STK, the vehicle registration certificate (the small registration card) is enough. If you had the emissions tested beforehand at a separate station, bring the test report too – it is valid for 30 days. The regulations do not require the large vehicle logbook, an ID or a power of attorney.
-
How much do the STK and the emission test cost?
Each station sets its own price; the regulations do not set official prices for the STK. According to overviews from 2025–2026, a regular car inspection costs roughly CZK 1,100–1,400 and the emission test about another CZK 600–1,000. We are gradually verifying the prices of individual stations on naSTK.
-
Emission test: when, where and how long is it valid?
Emissions are tested at every regular STK, except for motorcycles (category L) and electric cars. You can have them tested at the emission bay of the STK or beforehand at a separate emission test station – you must then show the report at the STK within 30 days.
-
What if my car fails the STK?
With minor defects (A) the car passes and you just fix them. A major defect (B) means the vehicle is temporarily roadworthy: you may drive it for 30 days and must bring it for a repeat inspection within that time. With a dangerous defect (C) the vehicle is not roadworthy and must not be used on the road.
